Blimey, two for the price of one! It looks like he did most of his murders (12 out of 15) at Melrose Avenue, so I'll definitely swing by that one, but Cranley Gardens is vying for attention with Highgate Wood on the Capital Ring, so I'll have to think about it. The story for Cranley Gardens is somewhat better, though... :-)

ah, i think the cricklewood house (melrose avenue) is a different house - he lived, and commited his heinous deeds, both there and in muswell hill - at 23 cranley gardens, where he was caught - http://www.crimelibrary.com/serial_killers/predators/nilsen/attic_3.html.
i seem to have followed him round when i moved from willesden to muswell hill a couple of years ago...

you're right about the dollis hill area being a bit of a wilderness - i was there for 4 years and can't think of anything to recommend you going to see - although if you're peckish edwards bakery on willesden high street does some tasty dirt-cheap cakes - there's also a reclamation yard worth looking around and a few gospel churches that you can hear rocking out on sunday mornings

Thanks Toby, that is *great*! I'll add it to the Dollis Hill - Willesden Green section, as I couldn't find anything interesting between those two stations at all, and it's pretty much on the way. Nice one.

It should help liven the Jubilee line up a bit. :-)

mark, on the murder theme - between highgate and east finchley on the northern line (with a short detour) - is cranley gardens, the location of Dennis Nilsen's grizzly series of murders... and where he was caught after flushing too many body parts down the drain and causing a blockage... he should have tried mr muscle drain cleaner, it's powerful stuff...

Hi Toby.

Excellent photos! And a great idea, too , walking the District and making a photostory of it. I'm planning to take photos as I walk, of course, but I'll need more than a little luck for them to turn out as well as pixelhut's (you can tell that he's been a professional).

Once I've got my schedule worked out, I'll take a more thorough look at his Flickr feed. I might get inspired to deviate via some of the more interesting sights!

Cheers,

Hey Mark,
Your new project sounds interesting, I'll definitely be following progress. Another friend of mine is currently walking the District Line from east to west. He's photographing it - they're excellent pics as he used to be a professional photographer. You can check them out on his flickr feed - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pixelhut/sets/72157603801078506
I can see great potential for a collaboration here...
Cheers

Hi Mark.

Ah yes, the feet. Luckily I have a pair of posh trainers I bought from the London Marathon shop about a year ago when I thought I was going to be working from home more; I figured jogging for 15 minutes a day was a good way to prevent cabin fever, but I haven't really worked from home since (probably in fear of jogging). So for the urban bits, it's trainers, and for the rest I've got a nice soft, worn-in pair of walking boots. Still, I bet the blisters still kick in...

7 August is a date, and I'll get myself a ticket as soon as I get a chance. The only quandary is whether or not to walk on the Friday; it might actually help clear my head, doing a few miles. :-)

Hope to see you before then, though.

Hi Mark,

This looks like a fascinating, if massive undertaking, especially once you start looking at the list of stations. I can see it's not Land's End to John o'Groats but you've gotta look after those feet even so ;-)

I hope you've planned in some rest days, including Thursday 7th August for the GBBF ?

Expecting to see you there, if not before, and catch up with all the stories you haven't got round to blogging about by then.

Good luck and I'll be RSS'ing you to keep on top of the latest developments.
