Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Tubewalker application cost?

Zone 1 is included for free, while Zones 2 to 9 are available via an In App Purchase. The In App Purchase currently costs £1.99.

I've bought a new iPhone. I unlocked Zones 2 to 9 on my old phone, but will I have to pay again to unlock them on my new phone?

No, you won't have to pay again – you will never be charged twice by Tubewalker for the same In App Purchase. When you unlock Zones 2 to 9 for the first time, the App Store keeps the details on its servers, so if you ever try to purchase Zones 2 to 9 again, the App Store will tell Tubewalker that you have already bought it once, and Tubewalker will unlock Zones 2 to 9 without charging you (it will tell you this after you have entered your password and it has contacted the App Store). This applies whether you have bought a new iPhone and are installing Tubewalker on your new device, or if you've deleted Tubewalker from your iPhone and decide to install it again.

How many Tube lines are covered?

The Tubewalker application covers the entire London Underground network. Zone 1 is included for free, while Zones 2 to 9 are available via a £1.99 In App Purchase. Note that the Docklands Light Railway and London Overground aren't part of London Underground, so they aren't included.

Which versions of iOS will Tubewalker run on?

Version 1 of Tubewalker works on iOS 3.0 to 5.1.1, while version 2 works on iOS 4.3 to 6.

Will it run on an iPod Touch?

Yes, Tubewalker also runs on iPod Touch.

Does it need an internet connection?

If you don't have an internet connection, then although the maps will work, the map tiles won't download, so they won't be much use for walking. Also, the photos in the Photos tab are loaded from tubewalker.com, so you won't be able to view these. Everything else will work properly without the internet.

Does it need a GPS-enabled device?

No, it doesn't need a GPS-enabled device, though the 'Find nearest tubewalks' feature won't be terribly accurate if you don't have GPS, and your current location shown on the maps may be some way off. Devices without a built-in GPS can often use phone signal triangulation or your wi-fi connection to work out where you are, so these features should still work, they just might not be as good as with a GPS-enabled device.

I've already bought the iPad version of Tubewalker. Do I need to pay again to unlock Zones 2 to 9 in the iPhone version?

I'm afraid the answer is that you do have to pay again, which is something that I don't feel great about, as my original plan was to make the same App Store purchase unlock both the iPad and iPhone versions. Unfortunately, the way that I built it (as two separate apps) makes this impossible, as Apple don't allow you to share the same App Store purchase item between different apps. If I had built it as a single app that worked on both iPhone and iPad, then one code could unlock both, but I didn't go down that route, so I'm afraid there's no option but to pay twice. Sorry about that... but it's still cheaper than a pint, so hopefully it's not a deal-breaker. :-)
