The first rule about travel is do it the way the Romans do. When surrounded by touts as guides, you pick one. One you like. Then the other tout-guides disappear, and you have someone to carry your bags and watch your back.

Good tip, that. The only disadvantage I can think of is that by paying for guides when you don't need them, there's a danger of encouraging more people to try their luck hassling visitors, which makes the problem worse.

There are plenty of countries that are poorer than Morocco that don't have such insistent 'faux guides'; it would be a shame to see tourism hampered (and therefore the income it generates) just because the amount of hassle compares unfavourably with other countries. Visit Mali or Morocco as a white person, and then try India or Nepal - it's so different, which is a shame.

Still, I like your suggestion. It worked for me in Djenne, after all! 😀
